The database was formed for improving methods of control of organic matter regime in sod-podzolic soils based on the analysis of results of research in stationary experiments in scientific institutions of the North-Eastern region of European Russia. The levels of minimum content of humus which characterize the content of inert organic matter – 1.60...1.9% for heavy and medium loamy soils; 1.4...1.7% for light loamy soils were established. The values of relative losses of humus (6…23%) were depended both on initial level of humus content, and on the nature of the use of arable land for about thirty years. Areas of transformable (active) carbon were designated; maximum values (0.32…0.81%) were achieved with prolonged use of organic and mineral fertilizes. Bio-resources of crop rotations (without additional input of fertilizers) provided the accumulation of active transformable organic matter to 0.1...0.3% C. The directions of improvement of the qualitative composition of humus were determined. Sustained non-deficit and positive balance of humus was achieved by the application of organic-mineral, organic-lime-mineral fertilizer systems in typical and biologized crop rotation. In the fodder crop rotations with perennial and annual herbs it is possible to achieve the positive balance of humus with use of lime-mineral fertilizer system.
